FUN SATURDAY ACTIVITIES

1-November-2009 2 comments

Earlier, after doing my yearly renewal for road tax at Kuala Belait this morning and getting my hair cut  in the afternoon, I happened to pass by KB river. While passing by the river, I noticed some activity near KBBC. Since I brought my gear along with 50mm F/1.4, I decided to  come down to take a look. I think this is my way to relax as been pretty busy over the past few weeks.

High power line workers have the most hazardous jobs.

Incredible work high power line installer crews

Working on high power lines and ensuring the installation is completed can be a hair raising job.

In 2007, electrical linemen were more likely to be killed at work than police or firefighters, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Of all the occupations the bureau tracks, electrical line installation and repair ranked sixth among fatal injuries.

He climbed high on the ladder then climbing poles to access power lines has been a routine task.

TASEK MERIMBUN OUTING 2009

25-June-2009 8 comments
This trip to Tasek Merimbun was accompanied by Cikgu Mansor, Jan Shim and Husini. Cikgu Mansor and I meet for the first time at this very first photography trip with Cikgu and Husini. Jan Shim picked me up from Lumut at about 4:15pm. It was not only enjoying but considering it as a “educational trip” for me. The wetland is included within the recently designated Tasek Merimbun National Park, which initially covers an area of 7,800 ha. The National Park is still under development, and enforcement of the park regulations has not as yet been fully implemented. It has been proposed that the National Park be categorized into three zones: an intensive visitor use area, a low intensity visitor use area, and a conservation area. The low intensity visitor use area and conservation area would be strictly reserved for educational and scientific research purposes.

Two type of wetland particularly found here is ” freshwater lakes and associated marshes (lacustrine)” and “swamp forest, temporarily flooded forest”

“We have spent about $10,000 collected from villagers to build the new bridge and maintain it. That is why we have to enforce on the toll payments for visitors who wish to cross the bridge to Jelundong Island,” Abdul Nasir Untong said.

Once on arrival, the first lesson I pickup from Cikgu Mansor is the Cashew tree.  The danger of  popping the raw cashew in your mouth can caused mouth numbness.  I’m learning the malay word “Kebas” which means “numb”. This is another “Sehari sepatah kata” for me which I learned from Cikgu.

You heard me right,  Gecko is a lizard that bark like a “dog”. Too bad as I was so keen to see how it actually looks like.

DUANWU FESTIVAL 2009

29-May-2009 4 comments

Duan Wu jie (Duan Wu Festival) or more popularly known as the Dragon boat Festival or the Dumpling Festival falls on May 5 of Chinese lunar calendar. This year Duanwu festival falls on Thursday, 28th May. Duan Wu Jie is not commonly known as Dumpling Festival in China. I guess it was introduced by the clever dumpling businessmen. After all, dumpling is the first thing that we think of whenever we talk about Duan Wu Jie.

Duan Wu Festival is meant to commemorate Qu Yuan, a Chu scholar who was a high ranking official to the Chu King during the Warring States period (around 278 B.C.). Qu Yuan was banished from the Court when he opposed Chu’s alliance with Qin. This greatest ancient Chinese poets who drowned himself in the Miluo river to protest the corrupt court when Qin conquered Chu eventually.

Legend has that people throw zongzi or rice dumpling into the river to feed Qu Yuan’s spirit. Others say that they are meant to keep fish from feeding on Qu’s body.

The Chinese in the Belait district gather annually at the beach in late afternoon on the Duanwu festival. There isn’t any Dragon boats which I am very keen to photo shoot. For activities on the beach, please visit SHIMWORLD.
