Rock Concert Photography

Earlier this year, in February, I shot an assignment for the band “CanDoLah”. CanDoLah is located in Seria, Brunei Darussalam, and has been founded in 2008. I like getting into concert photography as it is the challenge to take good shots and capture the emotion that motivates me. Stage lighting can be tricky, so you have to get your exposure right or you’ll wind up with beautifully composed, crap shots.

During the assignment, I decided to use the Canon Speedlite 550EX Flash in E-TTL mode and mounting it to a PhotoFlex LS-B2320Y light stand which I bought from B&H Photo. The 550EX Flash is set to ‘Slave’ mode and triggered by another flash Canon Speedlite 580EX II on camera in ‘Master’ mode.

Band1-1

Only ambient light, NO Flash.

Band1-2

Ambiet light + Off Camera Flash.

When you have a band only playing 4 songs to capture the emotion of the concert, every single one of them has to count. There is no room for error.

Another photo on the Lighting Setup. That stage is about 5 feet high.

Work with the stage lights – move around and use them to rim light, sidelight or silhouette your subject. If there’s a background light flaring into your lens, see if you can make the flare work for you.

Drummers are particularly tricky to get clean shots of, as they are surrounded by all kinds of ‘hardware’ and are usually also far back on the stage.Drummer-1
